A note on the surname spelling variations:
The spelling of the surname that I use for each person is the one which I have the earliest record of (normally from a parish register) - many would have used more than one variation during their lifetime, though. Whilst the various spellings of the surname were originally probably due to illiteracy and having to rely on a registrar spelling the name as he thought correct, there were many ancestors who were well aware of the different ways of spelling their surname. John Mekins (1730 - 1799), in his Will clearly signs his name and is refered to as MAKINS, yet he refers to his brothers Jeremiah and Thomas as MAKENS. The cluster of family gravestones in the Gressenhall churchyard contain both MAKINS and MAKENS and various marriages have had one or more witnesses within the same family using a different spelling of the surname. The most common variation found in this genealogy is MAKINS, followed by MAKENS and MEKINS.
